“Dirty Money” (C43: Proper 20)

Rev. Antonio Vargas Jr.

Jeremiah 8:18-9:1 and Psalm 79:1-9; Amos 8:4-7 and Psalm 113; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Luke 16:1-13

Vargas begins his sermon with a profile of James W. Fifield, Jr.–the so-called “Apostle of Millionaires”–who became a sort of “spiritual spokesperson for big business.” Vargas uses Fifield to explore the question, “Is wealth really the best evidence of God’s favor?” Vargas says that “in the economy of God—-the holy economy described by the prophets, embodied by Jesus, and echoed throughout Scripture—-money doesn’t work the way Fifield said it did.”

Rev. Antonio Vargas Jr. is the term pastor of First Church of Christ, Congregational in New Britain, Connecticut. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, and a master of divinity from Yale Divinity School.
