B43: The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year B (2021)

Michael Renninger

Father Michael Renninger, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia begins today’s sermon, “Doing It Right,” with a story about a classmate he and his fellow seminarians disliked. He said, “When she showed up, prepared and ready, she made the rest of us look…lazy. She was doing things right – and her presence revealed that we were doing things wrong.” Today’s scriptures from Mark 9:30-37 and Wisdom of Solomon 1:16-2:1 & 12-22 describe people who, like Renninger’s classmate, “face the anger and resentment of others, precisely because they are living their lives the way God calls all of us to live. They are doing it right – and that upsets the people around them.”
