Ryan Ahlgrim, Pastor of First Mennonite Church in Richmond, Virginia, broaches the subject of Jesus’ baptism (Luke 3:15-17, 21-22) by talking about the importance of timing. He confesses that in his ministry there have been some things he tried to do that didn’t work out, simply because the timing was wrong. “Timing is everything,” Ahlgrim suggests. So, what was it that made Jesus believe this time, when he was “about thirty years old,” was the right time to leave his carpenter’s bench in Nazareth and make the long trek to the Jordan River where John was baptizing?
