B09: The Third Sunday after the Epiphany, Year B (2021)

Amy Starr Redwine

“Many of us are familiar with the story we often call Jonah and the whale,” begins Amy Starr Redwine, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia. In today’s passage from Jonah 3:1-5 and 10, Jonah goes to Nineveh, preaches, and the people repent. “Except, that’s not the end of the story. Because even though we usually turn Jonah’s story into a cautionary tale about trying to run away from God’s call, what happens at the end suggests that this story has another important lesson to teach us…It is a perfect example of someone fighting against the current of God’s mercy and grace,” continues Redwine. How do we give God’s mercy and grace to others when we don’t want to do so? It’s a timely message for us, just as it was for Jonah!
