“A Taste of Salt” (A11: Fifth Sunday After the Epiphany)

Rev. Dr. Terry Hamilton-Poore

Isaiah 58:1-9a (9b-12); Psalm 112:1-9 (10); 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 (13-16); Matthew 5:13-20

Hamilton-Poore explores how Jesus’ call for his followers to be “salt of the earth” is a call for us to “transform what is bitter into something sweet.” She says that “we are not called to be bitter,” but rather “to pour ourselves out in order to amplify the sweetness in the world.”

Rev. Dr. Terry Hamilton-Poore is pastor and head of staff at First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, a master of divinity from Duke Divinity School, and a doctorate of ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary. Prior to Birmingham, she served churches in Missouri, Iowa, California and Wisconsin.
