A47: The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A (2020)

Phillip Martin

In Matthew 22:15-22, the Pharisees tried to trick Jesus by asking him about paying taxes. His answer is familiar to us. “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Phillip Martin, pastor of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Richmond, Virginia, reminds us that just as we carve faces into pumpkins and Caesar stamped his own face on the denarius coin, Jesus reminded us that our lives are stamped with God’s image. We operate with the currency of the Creator. Listen to find out what that currency is, and how it can change the world.
