A52: The Twenty-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A (2023)

Ryan Ahlgrim

Ryan Ahlgrim, pastor of Richmond’s First Mennonite Church, says, “unlike Aesop’s Fables, Jesus’s parables are not always easy to understand. Some of his parables are downright puzzling.” He finds today’s parable of the talents from Matthew 25:14-30 to be one of those puzzling parables. Christians over the centuries have interpreted this parable in a lot of different ways. Ahlgrim says that on the surface, it seems simple enough, but what does this story mean? Ahlgrim admits that he is not sure, but he gives three possible interpretations. He suggests that perhaps the most plausible interpretation is one that challenges us to think about what it takes to follow Jesus. Do you have what it takes?
