A35: The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A (2020)

Michael Renninger

In today’s sermon, from Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52 and Romans 8:26-39, Father Michael Renninger, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia, tells the story of Thelma, an African American woman who attended the cathedral in Richmond in June of 1969. People got up and moved when she sat down, but Thelma resolved that she felt at home there and would continue to attend. She knew that no matter what others might say about her, she was, in the eyes of her Lord, a “pearl of great price,” and nothing, not even the prejudice of her fellow church members, could separate her from his love.
