John Rohrs, Rector of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia, delivers a homily on the Beatitudes of Jesus from Matthew 5:1-12. We often hear Jesus saying that the poor, the meek, and the mourning are “blessed,” but what if we could hear it another way? What if we could hear him saying, “beloved”? What if, when he looked around at that crowd that’s what he saw: the beloved children of God? And what if, when he looks around the typical church sanctuary on a Sunday morning, even yours, that’s what he sees. Good news, Beloved! God has not given up on you. The presence and power of Jesus is proof enough of that.
