“Transformative Encounter on the Emmaus Road” (A21: Third Sunday of Easter)

Rev. Dr. David P. Gushee

Acts 2:14a, 36-41; Psalm 116:1-4,12-19; 1 Peter 1:17-23; Luke 24:13-35

“Some people say that the only way a Christian should change his mind about a doctrine or teaching is if he can be shown through scripture,” says Gushee. “They argue that we should not ever let a life experience change the way we think about scripture. We should not ever allow someone’s story to tempt us to change our mind. I want to propose today that the story of the Emmaus Road encounter between Jesus and two brokenhearted disciples teaches the exact opposite lesson.”

Rev. Dr. David P. Gushee
is Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics at Mercer University. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary, a master of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a master of philosophy and a doctorate in Christian ethics from Union Theological Seminary in New York.
