“Stay in the Boat” (A37: Proper 14)

Rev. Bob Fox

1 Kings 19:9-18; Psalm 85:8-13; Romans 10:5-15; Matthew 14:22-33

Fox argues that Matthew’s story of Jesus walking on water is less about Peter’s individual courage than the boat as a symbol of the church. Against the “I’ll do it myself” gospel of American individualism, the sermon urges believers to stay with the gathered community through storms, trusting that Jesus comes, rescues, and reveals God’s presence there.

Rev. Bob Fox is coordinator for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Kentucky. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, a master of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a master of arts from Vanderbilt University.
