“Letting Go”

A Sermon for Proper 23, Year B (2024), the Twenty First Sunday after Pentecost

Courtney Allen Crump is Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. She begins this week’s sermon from Mark 10:17-31 by saying, “Jesus’s directive for the rich man to sell his possessions and give the money to the poor makes today’s gospel lesson one of the most controversial and perhaps most creatively interpreted passages in Christian history.” You can guess how “creative” some people have been in excusing themselves from any obligation to sell what they have. But what is Jesus really trying to say? What does he want us to learn from this story of a rich man who wasn’t able to follow him, who was instead “shocked” and went away grieving, possessed by his possessions? Push the “play” button and join Courtney Allen Crump on a quest for the answers.
