C45: The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year C (2022)

Joy J. Moore

The Rev. Dr. Joy J. Moore, Professor of Biblical Preaching at Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, begins today’s sermon by quoting Elton John’s song, “If There’s A God In Heaven (What’s He Waiting For?)” She wonders if you’ve ever asked this question as well. Moore says of today’s text, Habakkuk 1:1-4 and 2:1-4, “This ancient text allows us to eavesdrop on a prophet’s conversation with the creator of the universe. You see, Habakkuk knows the promises of God. Promises that suggested the situation the people now find themselves in is not God’s intention for them. And yet, those promises of God remain unfulfilled.” Moore reminds us that in Habakkuk’s lament, “It’s not God who is waiting, it’s us. We are waiting for God’s next move.” Listen as Moore challenges us with the question, “What are you doing while you wait on God’s next move?”
