C21: The Fourth Sunday of Easter, Year C (2016)

Amy Butler

Have you ever been asked the question, “Tell me about your church?” How do you even begin to answer this question? The Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, Interim Senior Minister of National City Christian Church in Washington, DC, attempts to give us a way to answer this question as she preaches a sermon called “Elevator Speech” from Acts 4:5-12. She looks at the story of Peter and John being questioned before the Sanhedrin about healing a man. They wanted to know who Peter and John were and what they were about, not necessarily how they healed. What is their identity? With whom do they identify? Butler says, “With a concise boldness that we’d never expect from Peter, they declared who they were, followers of Jesus Christ…There is something so powerful about knowing who you are and not being afraid to say it out loud.” What can we learn from the first disciples about our identity?
