“Why” is probably a question we have all asked at some point, especially after natural or moral disaster. In the parable of the fig tree in Luke 13:1-9, people approach Jesus asking the same question, “Why?” Jim Somerville, pastor of Richmond’s First Baptist Church points out that Jesus has a penchant for making things personal and pointed. Those Galileans whose blood Pilate mingled with their sacrifices? That could be you. Those eighteen who perished when the tower of Siloam fell on them? That could be you. The fig tree that the vineyard owner wants to cut down? That could be you. What can spare you from that fate? Listen and find out.
