In today’s sermon from John 1:(1-9), 10-18, Jim Somerville, pastor of Richmond’s First Baptist Church and co-founder of A Sermon for Every Sunday, takes on the doctrine of Incarnation, as does the author of John’s Gospel. Somerville has trouble keeping it as simple as “the Word became flesh” because we all have different concepts of what that “flesh” should be. Somerville challenges, “Instead of starting with your notions of God and imagining what kind of flesh they would take on, start with Jesus and imagine what kind of God would take on that particular flesh.”
