C02: Second Sunday of Advent, Year C (2015)

Luke Powery

Who was John the Baptist?  “He’s the kind of guy who makes fashion statements by wearing camel’s hair,” Luke Powery says.  “He was turned down for a job on the Food Network because he wanted to teach folks how to barbecue locusts with wild honey.  He isn’t a Little House on the Prairie kind of man.  He isn’t high on your list of babysitters, or presidential candidates, or pastoral candidates.  He’s a prophet, and no one wants to hire a prophet.”

And yet, God can use somebody like that, and maybe somebody like you.

The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery is the dean of Duke University Chapel and associate professor of homiletics at Duke Divinity School. A national leader in the theological study of the art of preaching, Powery regularly delivers sermons at Duke Chapel as well as at churches throughout the U.S. and abroad.  This week’s sermon is from Luke 3:1-6, as John the Baptist prepares the way of the Lord.
