C01: First Sunday of Advent, Year C (2018)

Amy Butler

The Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, Senior Minister of the Riverside Church in New York City, preaches on Luke 21:25-36. Butler questions why this passage (one we probably would not read as a bedtime story to our children) is the first passage for Advent.  Maybe it’s because Jesus knew the witness of God’s people could not be eliminated by the destruction of the temple, but by fear.  So, how do we overcome our own fear?  How do we learn the lesson that “life truly begins when we find something worth dying for”?   Look around outside the comfortable walls of your church and home. What are you willing to die for this Advent season so that you can begin to live?
