B40: The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year B (2021)

Will Willimon

“Well, once again Jesus’ critics are on the prowl, seeking to trip him up in a way that they can use to discredit him, or worse. They try to get Jesus into a debate of Jewish purity laws,” begins Will Willimon, Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School, acclaimed preacher, and author of over sixty books. In today’s sermon, “What’s Wrong with the World?”, from Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23, Willimon says, “Jesus takes their charge seriously…Jesus intensifies the demands of the law by saying that we ought not get hung up on outward obedience but ought to be concerned with the “heart,” inward, deep obedience to God.” Jesus challenges us to make sure the external lines up with the internal.
