B40: The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year B (2015)

Will Willimon

Dr. Will Willimon, Bishop in the United Methodist Church and Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School, preaches a sermon on the Gospel lesson from Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23. He says, “A member of the youth group asked me if Muslims were going to be saved, and I realized that when Jesus pronounces judgment, it isn’t usually on people of other religions: it’s on people of his own religion.” What about us? How are we doing when it comes to “keeping the law,” and how do we measure up to Jesus’ different and higher standards?
