A42: The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A (2020)

Brian Blount

In today’s Gospel lesson, Matthew 18:21-35, Peter wanted to know the statute of limitations on sin. “How many times should I forgive?” Brian K. Blount, President and Professor of New Testament at Union Presbyterian Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, says that the New Revised Standard Version translates Jesus’ answer as seventy-seven times. But, he says, “the Greek is confusing. It could just as easily translate seventy times seven. The exact number though is not the point.” Then what is the point? Listen to find out how Blount unpacks this concept of perpetual forgiveness and how to put it into action in our lives today.
