A stranger once asked Jim Somerville, “Have you been born again?” He thought he should say yes, and eventually he did, but it left him wondering: “Why would anyone ask that question in the first place?” The answer, of course, is this week’s Gospel lesson from John 3:1-17, where Jesus insists that Nicodemus must be born again.
