“A Litmus Test for the Ages” (A47: Proper 24)

Rev. Dr. Katie Callaway

Isaiah 45:1-7; Psalm 96:1-9,(10-13); 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10; Matthew 22:15-22

Callaway argues that Roger Williams’ vision of “soul liberty” offers a prophetic model for navigating faith, politics, and conscience. She explores Jesus’ response to a question about taxes, and she affirms religious liberty as the space where individuals discern what belongs to Caesar, what belongs to God, and how to choose neighborly love.

Rev. Dr. Katie Callaway is director of development at BJC. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College, a master of divinity from Wake Forest University School of Divinity, a master of theology from Candler School of Theology, and a doctorate in creative writing as public theology from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
