B29: The Third Sunday after Pentecost, Year B (2015)

Andrew Foster Connors

In his sermon, “A Notoriously Bad Gardener” from Mark 4:26-34, Andrew Foster Connors, pastor of Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland, begins, “I’m notoriously bad at gardening…which makes this kind of a parable a problem for a person like me.” He continues, “The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed…The kingdom of God doesn’t stand a chance in the hands of an agrarian challenged person like me. The kingdom of God doesn’t stand a chance for someone who doesn’t know the first thing about tending to it. The kingdom of God might not make it in hands like mine.” If you can identify with Connors, the good news is that Jesus reminds us that our job is just to scatter the seeds everywhere. God will take care of the rest.
