“Jesus and the Working Poor” (A43: Proper 20)

Rev. Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre

Jonah 3:10–4:11; Psalm 145:1-8; Philippians 1:21-30; Matthew 20:1-16

De La Torre explores the story of the “workers in the vineyard” from Matthew 20, and he says we need to stop “spiritualizing” the meaning. Instead, De La Torre argues that it’s really a story about the “working poor” and how living wages are part of the kingdom of heaven.

Rev. Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre is professor of social ethics and Latinx studies at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. He holds a bachelor of science in political science from Florida International University, a master of public administration from American University, a master of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a master of arts in religion and a doctor of philosophy in religion from Temple University. He was also honored by Virginia Theological Seminary with a doctor of divinity in 2024. See more at https://drmigueldelatorre.com
