“A Messiah Who Walks Toward Danger” (A40: Proper 17)

Rev. Justin Bell

Jeremiah 15:15-21; Psalm 26:1-8; Romans 12:9-21; Matthew 16:21-28

Bell highlights how Jesus calls disciples away from power, comfort, and self-protection toward sacrificial love and faithful service. Using Peter’s resistance, Bell’s own testimony, and practical examples from Romans 12, the sermon argues that “taking up the cross” means choosing costly compassion over self-interest, trusting that true life is found in following Christ’s path.

Rev. Justin Bell is co-lead pastor at The Table in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Christian theology from Anderson University and a master’s degree in ministry leadership from Southeastern Seminary.
