“Don’t Other. Smother.” (C48: Proper 25)

Rev. Erica Whitaker

Joel 2:23-32 and Psalm 65; Sirach 35:12-17 or Jeremiah 14:7-10, 19-22 and Psalm 84:1-7; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18; Luke 18:9-14

Whitaker uses her Aunt Joy, who is a “smotherer,” to call listeners to love and grace. “No matter what position we find ourselves in,” says Whitaker, “grace always places us in a posture of humility. A posture that extends God’s grace to ourselves and to those around us.”

Rev. Erica Whitaker is the Chief Operating Officer and Teaching Professor of Preaching at BSK Theological Seminary. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and a master of divinity from Truett Seminary at Baylor University. She will defend her doctoral dissertation for the International Baptist Theological Study Centre in Amsterdam in spring 2026.
