Jesus tells stories about a lost sheep, lost coin and lost son–but hearers don’t “get it.” And why don’t we get it, asks McDaniel? “If you are anything like those clergy struggling to understand what Jesus is teaching … if you are anything like me … you know it is so hard seeing and embracing the continual, expansive Movement of God who is still at work today. It is so hard looking beyond the teachings and traditions that shaped you as a young person, to seeing Christ’s embrace that provocatively goes beyond what we would ever expect.”
Rev. David McDaniel is the senior pastor of Holmeswood Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama, a master of divinity from Truett Seminary at Baylor University, and is pursuing a doctorate in ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary.
