“Disruptive Grace” (C41: Proper 18)

Rev. Dr. Stephen Cook

Jeremiah 18:1-11 and Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18; Deuteronomy 30:15-20 and Psalm 1; Philemon 1:1-21; Luke 14:25-33

Cook uses the book of Philemon to discuss what he calls “disruptive grace.” Says Cook: “Grace can be so disruptive, can’t it? Looking through the lens of grace upsets and unsettles everything we think we know about life and people and relationships. It’s the sort of thing that happens when we get baptismal water in our eyes.”

Rev. Dr. Stephen Cook is the senior pastor of Second Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, a master of divinity from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, a master of theology from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, and a doctorate in ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary.
