Sermon for Advent 3B
The Rev. Wallace Adams-Riley led the congregation of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia, for nine years, where he was privileged to host the church’s annual Lenten preaching series and some of the finest preachers in America: Michael Curry, Brian McLaren, Nadia Bolz-Weber, Will Willimon, Lauren Winner, John Shelby Spong, Amy Butler, and many more. Wallace is, himself, a fine preacher, and his sermon from John 1:6-8, 19-28 is a good example. He quotes Karl Barth, who said of Grunewald’s representation of John the Baptist in the famous Isenheim Altarpiece, “Could anyone point away from himself more impressively or more completely?”
